Fashion forecast

With fashion on the boom here’s a look at what changes the fashion industry expects to walk into the following year
Elevation of Pakistan’s Bridal Industry
It’s been a gradual evolution but there’s not a doubt in anyone’s mind that Pakistan’s fashion industry is all set for change. One has seen the ready to wear industry fine tune with the onset of fashion weeks and now that discipline will inevitably fall into bridals as well. The year 2011 has ended with one of Pakistan’s platforms for bridal fashion, the PFDC L’Oreal Paris Bridal Week. While there can hardly be cutting edge trends in bridal couture, there has to be some level of innovation and there has to be something new. One expects to see all that and more as the bridal industry gears towards haute couture and high fashion in 2012.
Resurrection of Fashion Pakistan
One of Pakistan’s two major fashion councils, Karachi’s Fashion Pakistan council, is all set for a long-awaited comeback in 2012. The council, pioneered by some of the biggest names in Pakistani fashion – Rizwan Beyg, Maheen Khan, Shamaeel Ansari, Faiza Samee, Bunto Kazmi, Amir Adnan and Deepak Perwani – went underground after a bad run in the accounts department last year. A change of guard and several logistical changes later, they say they finally have their act together and will be returning to the limelight this year, possibly in March with a fashion week. But whether this administratively crumbling platform will be able to lay a solid foundation for success is anyone’s guess. Here’s to competition in the ranks and the comeback of some highly coveted and talented designers!
LSAs for more style and glamour
After celebrating their 10th anniversary last year, organisers have announced that the Lux Syle Awards will be stepping into a new and refreshed decade with 2012. It’ll be a step-up for style, as more fashion and glamour will be pumped into the show.
From jewellry worn by celebrities, to high fashion created for show hosts, fashion-music collaborations, edgy injections of creativity into performances and the LSA red carpet, the awards ceremony has epitomised style for a decade and this style will evolve further as the event steps into 2012.
Change of trends
Women will be advised to reroute their wardrobes back to a more structured and smarter look in 2012. Hemlines are predicted to rise several inches, the perfect length covering the knee but not the calf. And silhouettes will start shaping up, starting from the bodice and gradually working their way down to hugging the hips. It is time for women to hit the gym!
Trends in formal clothing, however, will more or less remain the same with only minor tweaking in the silhouette. Designers admit that women have invested so much in the longer, looser silhouette that it’ll be tough to wean them out of it. Give it another two years, they say.
Designer comebacks
The year 2012 will be a year for an exciting new guard of designers as well as a comeback for the established. The designers who are (hopefully) expected to make grand comebacks in 2012 are Rizwan Beyg, Iman Ahmed, Sonya Battla, Faiza Samee, Nilofer Shahid, Maheen Khan, Deepak Perwani and Maheen Karim amongst others. Shamaeel and Nomi Ansari – who showed recently in Karachi – are expected to stay in the picture. Sanam Chaudhri and Sania Maskatiya will feature prominently in the new guard along with Ali Xeeshan and Fahad Hussayn. Kamiar Rokni and Adnan Pardesy are expected to take ready-to-wear and couture to higher levels respectively. More on that when concrete confirmations come in…
