Tusshar to play Bengali babu

As Ramakanth, the South Indian writer who idolises Vidya Balan’s character in The Dirty Picture, Tusshar Kapoor is almost unrecognisable. The middle parting, moustache and the sometimes all-white attire from his father Jeetendra’s Madras potboilers like Tohfa (1984) and Himmatwala (1983), has raised many eyebrows, and the actor is smiling. “Some people are beginning to address me as Ramakanth and even Ramanujan, though that’s not my name, pointing out that it suits me perfectly,” he admits.
“It’s heartening because it’s a sign that you look convincing and your get-up has struck a chord with the film’s first trailers.”
Though born to a Punjabi father and a Sindhi mother, Tusshar has played a dutiful, Gujarati boy, Bhavesh, in the Rumi Jaffrey directed rom-com Life Partner in 2009.
Recently, he’s been filming Samir Karnik’s Char Din Ki Chandni in Rajasthan, another rom-com in which he plays a foreign-returned Rajput who has just four days to convince his class-conscious royal family that the beautiful banjaran (gypsy) he’s fallen in love with is the right match for him. “In January, I will head eastwards to play a Bengali babu for the first time,” he smiles.
Bhaiyyaji Superhit, a crazy Bollywood comedy co-starring Sunny Deol and Arshad Warsi, will flag off in Mumbai in the first month of 2012. Tusshar’s character is part of a production unit that shoots a film within the film, and he can’t wait to get started. “I’m going to concentrate on the language and my body language. Maybe I will learn a few Bengali words,” he muses.
Point out to him that Vidya is fluent in the language despite her Tamil roots, having even done a Bengali film, Bhalo Theko (2003), and Tusshar, looking surprised, quips, “Is that so? I didn’t know. Maybe I can take a few lessons in Bengali from her then.”
