Critics' verdict: Don 2 gets mixed reports!

Farhan Akhtar's Don 2 has witty, zany and cooler dialogues, great action sequences, sleek & stylish package, but lacks a tight script. SRK who's back in a negative avatar with the film has done full justice to his role. Here's what critics are saying about the movie:
Taran Adarsh, Bollywood Hungama (Rating: ***1/2): When viewed in isolation, Don 2 looks like the right package to woo the movie-going junta -- SRK in top form, a stylishly crafted story, pulsating and invigorating action and stunts. But it's not without its share of hiccups. In fact, the first hour and the post-interval portions of the film are akin to the two sides of the same coin. The first hour is bland, the second is energetic. The first hour is deficient in thrills, the second keeps you on the edge. The first hour disentangles at a languid pace, the second is feverish with several adrenaline rush moments.
Farhan Akhtar has narrated the story with aplomb, but the script needed to be crisper. "With Don 2, Farhan Akhtar reasserts himself as one of Hindi cinema's stylish storytellers. It wouldn't be erroneous to state that Don 2 redefines slick in Bollywood. But the film could've done with a tighter script. Besides, the writing is urban-centric and those with an appetite for international thrillers may take to the film instantly, especially the twists and turns in the second hour. Again, the conclusion to the story could've been simplified for the average viewer to decipher. Yet, all said and done, Don 2 mirrors the changing trends in Hindi cinema. Those with the conventional attitude or tilting towards the conservative form of cinema may find it difficult to absorb," says Adarsh.
David Dewitt, New York Times: The director, Farhan Akhtar, seems out to create a spectacular, international entertainment with “Don 2,” in a mix of Hindi and English and a dollop of German. And thanks to the unpretentious humor, he is mostly successful, though audiences will have to forgive the bland performances. Not the actors’ fault, really; when a cocky chuckle (Mr. Khan) or determined lips (Ms. Chopra) are your only character bits, you don’t have much character to explore. Only Kunal Kapoor, as a more sympathetic colleague of Don’s, has human moments. They’re almost out of place; subtlety is one language this playful film doesn’t speak.
Nikhat Kazmi, The Times Of India (Rating: ****): The high point of the film is Shah Rukh's delineation of the character of the Don. The actor interprets him as an arrogant, agile, wicked and wild dare-devil who has the most bizarre schemes up his sleeves. But that's not all. He also has the chutzpah to carry them through.
"Action is the other alluring selling point of Farhan Akhtar's film. The chases, the fights, the demolition, destruction, break-ins, escapes have all been done with a finesse that rivals the best of Hollywood. Watch the car chase between Priyanka and Shah Rukh and you'll get the point. It's not only high voltage that drips with passion which makes it seem almost like foreplay. The other notable sequences include the heist, the escape and Shah Rukh's larger-than-life leap from a high-rise while his assassin wrings his hands in dismay," says Kazmi.
Aniruddha Guha, DNA (Rating: ***): Like Danny Ocean. And John McClane. In Don 2, Akhtar manages to blend elements from various H’wood films, mostly Ocean’s Eleven and Die Hard, with a bit of Mission Impossible thrown in. This is our answer to Hollywood - a rehash of what they’ve done already. No points for originality. No points for writing either. If Akhtar’s film lulls you to sleep initially, in spite of some slick editing, it’s because the writing (Akhtar, Ameet Mehta, Amrish Shah) falters. Characters say boring, random things to each other, there’s a pointlessly long dance sequence (Hrithik Roshan, looking dapper in an unintentionally hilarious cameo), and the attempt at dialoguebaazi is laughable (“Jab tak Don ko asliyat ka pata chalega, tab tak Don mar chuka hoga”).
Komal Nahta, Koimoi.com (Rating: ***1/2): Farhan Akhtar, Ameet Mehta and Ambrish Shah’s story and screenplay are basically about plotting and planning, which keep the audience’s interest alive. The first half, however, moves at a leisurely pace and takes a while to come to the point. It is after interval that the pace picks up but even in the post-interval part, the initial reels are too technical and get confusing for the average viewer. But the last few reels are very engrossing and the revelation of the suspense (like in the first part, Don) is the highlight. Intrigue, suspense, style and drama – the four highlights of Don – are in evidence in the sequel too.
Daily Bhaskar.com (Rating: ***): Shah Rukh Khan compels one to leave the bitter memories of Ra. One behind and experience an exhilarating ride with Don 2. Hollywood style crisp action sequences and different avatars of SRK, prisoner and eventually ultra-classy Don keep the spectator busy. The story picks up pace in the post interval portions with tremendous suspense value related to Kunal Kapoor. The vulnerable love sequence between SRK and Priyanka also commands for appreciation in terms how it brings the necessary twist in the story which can be called the forte of Farhan Akhtar as a story-writer.
Rituparna Chatterjee, IBNLive, Tweet Review: The action is great, esp an exciting jailbreak. #Don2 promotions have been low key. The investment in action has paid off.
"Not gold, cash or secret documents. This time the eye is on Euro printing plates. #Don2 sets the pace for future heist movies."
"In many ways this is @iamsrk's film. He has a quiry sense of humour. Even behind bars he never fails to flirt with @priyankachopra."
"The storyline is not new, but the surprising change of heart is. Impalusible perhaps? But who knows what goes on in the mind of Don? #Don2"
"The @iamsrk fans will love him in this one. That much is for sure. #TweetReview #Don2"
Rediff (Rating: **1/2): And then how can one forget when Khan strikes the ultimate pose -- the camera captures him at an angle, as he slightly tilts his back, with his arms open sideways. It is King Khan's signature attempt to remind us that he is the master of the universe. At least his fans believe that.
Direction
"Farhan Akhtar yet again shows his brilliance as a director. Barring few loopholes which can be neglected like Vardhan (Boman) despite in the hitlist of police gets an easy entry into the bank is highly indigestible, Don 2 impresses at various stages. The theft sequence is amazing shot with no room for technical goof-ups especially the way SRK escapes the inside chamber with plates in his bag," according to Daily Bhaskar.com.
Performances
Shah Rukh Khan: "Don 2 marks SRK's return to anti-hero roles after enacting such roles with flourish so early in his career. Recall BAAZIGAR, DARR and ANJAAM. He plays a wicked, debonair anti-hero in Don 2. The character he portrays is iniquitous and sinful, but attractive at the same time and SRK lives it up with gusto. Besides, SRK has also experimented with varied looks in the film, from a debonair looking guy to a person with unkempt hair and stubble. Without doubt, DON 2 is SRK's best action movie to date," says Adarsh.
Priyanka Chopra: "Priyanka revisits her character of Roma in DON 2. Not only is the character more evolved, even her performance is of a high order. In fact, she enacts the role of an angry, tough lady who means business with a vengeance. Lara Dutta looks glamorous and alluring, but her character lacks meat," says Adarsh.
Kunal Kapoor: "He is decent, though he doesn't really get the scenes to prove his credentials. An actor of the caliber of Om Puri is wasted this time. Boman Irani lends the right texture to his character. He excels yet again. Nawab Shah should hit big league with DON 2. He plays one of the baddies with conviction. Alyy Khan is natural, enacting his part with ease. Sahil Shroff has screen presence and stands out in a brief role. Hrithik Roshan appears in a cameo", feels Adarsh.
Weak points
"The film does lack a bit on the emotional quotient and human relationships are hardly given a chance to grow. But just when you think it's all sound and fury, there's a sensuous tango between Roma and the Don as the cop opts to help the gangster she once loved and the gangster is determined to save his junglee billi (wild cat), any which way. A word about the dialogues: brilliant. A word about the music: mediocre (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy)," points out Kazmi.
"The situations are alarmingly unimaginative. Sample this: Don-ny Ocean (SRK) plans to get out of a high security prison by mixing the food given to prisoners with a liquid that results in mass food poisoning. Johar Mehmood In Hong Kong had a similar sequence where prisoners in a jail are given julab (laxative) on the sly, helping them flee. That was a farcical comedy. Here, it seems like a cop-out," says Guha.
"On the minus side, all that Don and his team do seems so easy that it appears rather unbelievable at times. Besides the confusing portion of the drama, this is another drawback of the script. Farhan Akhtar’s dialogues could’ve packed in more punch and power as they, at places, seem quite tame, especially those mouthed by Don, given that he is so powerful. But his dialogue about his mother being happy if she were alive and about and his dialogue about ‘Sir’ not going well with his personality are brilliant. Light moments are few and far between and had there been more of them, the appeal of the film would’ve been bigger," says Nahta.
Conclusion
"On the whole, Don 2 rides on star power and brand value. The film has a bland first hour, but the second half takes the film to another level. There's no denying that a cohesive script would've made a world of a difference to the film, but the tremendous hype, star power and the lucrative period [Christmas and New Year celebrations] will make its investors reap a harvest," concludes Adarsh.
"On the whole, Don 2 may not give the discerning audience a great high but it will be loved by those who like style, intrigue, suspense and attitude. It will score at the box-office and yield good profits to Reliance Entertainment (worldwide distributors). The producers, of course, have already made a huge profit by selling the worldwide rights and also by getting heavy subsidy from the German government. Business in big cities and multiplexes will be far better than in smaller towns and single-screen cinemas. The film will work wonders in the Overseas circuit," says Nahta.

Shah Rukh to visit Patna on Dec 22?

Shah Rukh Khan, who had to cancel his Don 2 - The King Is Back promotional trip to Patna for security reasons, will reportedly visit the Bihar capital Thursday. Filmmaker Prakash Jha says he takes the responsibility of security arrangements.
Last week, (December 13) SRK had to cancel his trip to Patna at the last minute and it left thousands of his fans bitterly disappointed. Patna District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Singh says the information about security threat to SRK during Patna visit came from Prakash Jha's multiplex Cinepolis, which is part of the Patna mall owned by him.
Efforts are now on to pinpoint the personnel at Cinepolis who misinformed Shah Rukh's entourage regarding the security arrangements.
A source close to SRK's entourage said: "This time we can't afford any glitches. We don't know why we were stopped from visiting Patna last week. But Shah Rukh is very keen not to disappoint his Patna fans."
"He's accommodated Patna into his tight schedule and he'll be flying down from Lucknow to Patna on Thursday. This time we aren't taking any risks. Yes, Shah Rukh won't be meeting his fans at Mr Prakash Jha's mall. The venue is being changed."
Jha is very upset with the mega-star's aborted visit to Bihar's capital and says he's willing to take personal charge of the security when SRK visits Patna this week.
"I feel outraged on a personal level and as a man from Bihar who has been trying to improve Bihar's image in Bollywood. So many stars from Mumbai, including Bachchan Saab (Amitabh Bachchan), have been to Patna. I can't understand why the security arrangements couldn't be good enough," said Jha angrily.
He added that the official organisers of Shah Rukh's visit should have given the administration more time to prepare for the visit.
"The mall takes full responsibility for Shah Rukh's security. I'd like him to know that during his visit to Patna his safety is my responsibility," Jha said.

Are you sure you want to DELETE this recipe?

A power-packed car chase scene in upcoming Shah Rukh Khan-Priyanka Chopra starrer Don 2 used 67 cars, and shut down some important streets in Berlin for three weeks. The sequence, covering prominent locations such in the capital of Germany, saw the cars being specially shipped from Korea.
The Brandenburgh Gate which houses the United States and Russian Consulates was cordoned off for the climax shots of the car chase, and this was specially allowed for Don 2 while previously, many Hollywood films were denied the same permission.
Every day, alternate routes and diversions were provided in lieu of the roads that were cordoned off for the shoot, and the entire filming schedule was well-supported by the Berlin government.
The scene is touted to be one of the best action sequences in Bollywood so far.

Top 10 Bollywood actors that ruled 2011!

From He-Man to funny man, from flamboyant to sombre - Bollywood's top notch actors have shone on the silver screen in various avatars and also kept the cash registers ringing. We list the top 10 actors of the year:

1) Salman Khan - He should be titled hit khan. If Bollywood's knight in shining armour bailed the industry out in 2009 and 2010, he boosted the box office business this year too with Bodyguard and Ready. In both, neither the content was premium, nor were the performances superlative, but what helped the actor stand out were the big bucks his films yielded at the box office, strengthening his position as a bankable star.

2) Aamir Khan: What one missed in Salman Khan's films was prominently present in Aamir Khan-starrer Dhobi Ghat. Aamir wowed his fans as a lonely painter in the directorial debut of his wife Kiran Rao, who deftly handled a bouquet of stories, travelling across various sections of society in the lanes and bylanes of Mumbai. The actor had just one release, that too, consciously designed for niche audiences, but everyone eulogised it, saying, "Wow! What a performance! What an actor!"
If that were not enough, Aamir was admired for daring to produce adult comedy Delhi Belly and the film's success further strengthened his image in volatile Bollywood.

3) Ranbir Kapoor: If his great grandfather, grandfather and parents are admired and respected for their cinematic genius, Ranbir Kapoor has proved that he is a true torch-bearer of the Kapoor khandan. The youngster excelled in his only release Rockstar, which was marred by a bad script. His role required a range of emotions and he stood out in every scene and kept the audiences hooked.
4) Shah Rukh Khan: Romance is his forte! But this time Shah Rukh Khan donned the garb of a superhero in RA.One to woo his fans. Though the film was not appreciated much for its content, his fans liked him as a geek scientist and as a superhero. He also earned praise for the use of technology, innovative marketing and promotional techniques to promote his product.

5). Amitabh Bachchan: Retirement? No way, says Big B. Instead he is grabbing central roles at the age of 69 and this year too he came out with two films Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap and Aarakshan - as different as chalk and cheese. If the former saw him as a flamboyant underworld don, the latter featured him as a college principal fighting for the rights of students. In terms of business, neither were money spinners, but as far as acting is concerned, Amitabh is Amitabh. He was terrific in both the roles and critics gave him a thumbs up.

6) Farhan Akhtar: When there is a huge star cast, it is not easy to make an impression. But Farhan Akhtar did that in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, which also starred Abhay Deol and Hrithik Roshan. The art of acting is all about sensitivity, emoting, feelings -and Farhan got them all right.

7) Hrithik Roshan: Usually seen in over-the-top roles, Hrithik Roshan for the first time did a role that was slightly offbeat and closer to reality. If Kites didn't allow him to fly high in the sky, his performance in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara helped him unleash his potential as an actor.

8) R. Madhvan: An NRI, who belongs to a middle-class family, returns home to find a wife. He encounters a drunken girl, who is not interested in marrying him. But her spirit is such that he falls head over heels in love with her and it becomes heartbreaking for him to let her go with some other guy. Madhavan not only suited the role, but he revelled in it, earning plaudits from both critics and fans.

9) Abhay Deol: He emerged as the dark horse. Be it a doomed lover in Dev D or a smart thief in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye, he has effortlessly carried his roles in the past. He continued his winning streak as a confused lover in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

10) Saif Ali Khan: This Khan showed his sparks in Omkara and after that he embarked on a journey that showed his versatility. This year he had just one release in Aarakshan, which was not a super hit, but the film's box office performance didn't overshadow Saif's work. Critics felt he scored very highly in sincerity, subtlety and sheer screen presence as a Dalit boy in the movie, highlighting the reservation issue.

Kareena-SRK back together!

Chennai Express has sent Bollywood into a speculative tizzy. A collaboration between Shah Rukh Khan and Golmaal director Rohit Shetty, the movie hit headlines when it was suggested that Katrina Kaif had been signed on as the heroine, making it her fourth film in succession opposite a Khan.
But SRK's RA.One costar Kareena Kapoor confirms that she will be the leading lady in the actioncomedy. "Rohit and I are finalising the script and other details. Once it's locked, we can take matters forward," confirms Kareena, adding they had already spoken about the film at length.
She admits, "Rohit is like family, and I am seriously looking forward to working with him again." Earlier, reports had claimed that after working with Shah Rukh in Yash Chopra's upcoming directorial return, Katrina had grown close to her leading man, who in turn, recommended her to Rohit. But industry sources suggest that since Rohit shares a good equation with Kareena after they worked together in the 2010 hit, Golmaal 3, he felt she would be a better fit for the firebrand role opposite SRK in Chennai Express.
"Kareena and Shah Rukh have worked together in Asoka (2001) and RA.One among others. She has always openly declared her fondness for him," says the insider. Interestingly, at a RA.One promotional event, SRK had quipped that he is all for working repeatedly with Kareena, but she's the one who is busy working with the other Khans. Ask Kareena whether she's keen to reappear alongside her RA.One co-star, and she says, "Of course, I would love to work with Shah Rukh again. Who wouldn't?"
At the moment, the Kapoor girl is awaiting the release of boyfriend Saif Ali Khan's Agent Vinod, followed by Karan Johar's Imran Khan-starrer Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. She is also shooting for Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine.

Will come soon, SRK assures Patna!

Shah Rukh Khan is disappointed that he couldn't visit Patna for the promotional activity of his forthcoming film Don 2: The King Is Back and says he plans to reschedule the event. "Will come to Patna for sure just firming up plans. Will figure out tomorrow. Now bored of waiting in a static plane. 5 hrs...wasted life," the 46-year-old posted on his Twitter account.
Due to some security issues, the event at the Patna was scrapped, and this would have been Shah Rukh's first visit to the city.
"Was super excited with my first ever visit to Patna, but district authorities said some security issue...Will come some other time. Damn!!!," he had tweeted earlier.
The Don 2 team started their multi-city promotion tour in non-metropolitan centres in India Tuesday and so far they have visited Nagpur, Ahmedabad and they are in Jaipur Friday.
Don 2: The King Is Back is the much-awaited sequel to Farhan Akhtar's 2006 action thriller Don - The Chase Begins, which itself was a remake of the 1978 film Don.
The movie, starring Shah Rukh, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani, Om Puri, Sahil Shroff, Aly Khan and Nawwab Khan, will release Dec 23.

SRK, Farhan promote Don 2 in Ahmedabad

"Off to ahmedabad kem cho?? And then jaipur ghani khamma!! Our promotions feel a lil like yatras during election times...ha ha," tweeted SRK.
"In Ahmedabad. Will be at Acropolis with Don and gang by 2 today.. See you there!" Farhan Akhtar later tweeted.

SRK: Bring on the romance!

Francois is finally ready with my breakfast, served in my favourite gold and my favourite gold and ruby goblet, a family heirloom bought from the treasures of Louis the XV. He seems to be in such a good mood, that I'm tempted to ask why the heat hasn't fried his brain yet.
Well if Shah Rukh Khan can handle the heat he received after RA.One, this little spike in the weather is nothing, says Frenchie. Good point, I must admit. Now he says that SRK has learnt his lesson, and is going back to his romantic roots for his next project, Chennai Express.
Tired of jumping off buildings and leaping onto moving cars, the only stunt King Khan wants to perform now is to sweep his leading lady off her feet. He's asked director Rohit Shetty, who had already designed the movie with plenty of action scenes, to add some more lovey-dovey moments, which the star is most comfortable with. From breaking bones to breaking hearts, there's no part of the anatomy, that SRK wont mess with.

Weary Shah Rukh Khan back to studios in January

Shah Rukh Khan is on his way back home to spend time with his kids after a marathon travel schedule. Currently on a promotional spree for his upcoming film, Don 2, the actor promises he'll return to the studios in January next year to start filming Yash Chopra's yet-to be titled romantic movie, which also features Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma as leading ladies.
"After a mammoth promotional exercise for RA.One, I needed the break to spend time with my kids at home and sleep in peace. But as the days go by, I'm reminded that I have to return to the studios soon," he smiles. "It's not such a task if the director is someone like Yash Chopra. It's a hardcore romantic movie. We should be on floors by the second or third week of January, hopefully. Yashji had very casually told me, "Tu kuch dates January ki de de pehle, phir aage ka plan karte hain. (Give us a few dates in January first, then we'll plan ahead)"
The actor will first face the camera with Katrina Kaif, and later be joined in April by actor Anushka Sharma, who's currently promoting her fourth YRF movie Ladies V/s Ricky Bahl. Soon after Yash Chopra announced his return to direction at 79, his company announced that the film would be 2012's Diwali release. After RA.One, it will be SRK's second Diwali release in continuity.
"I don't sign a film thinking that it will release on Diwali and or on Christmas. If my film is worthy, it will have a superb box-office run, even if it doesn't open during a festival. As filmmakers and actors, we target a festival because it's also the holiday season and we can have more families entering cinema halls than on a usual weekend," argues Shah Rukh. "Diwali has never disappointed me."

SRK, PC to host Zee Cine Awards!

Actors Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra will be hosting the upcoming Zee Cine Awards early next year.
The ceremony will take place at Venetian Macao on January 21. Confirming the same, Puneet Goenka of Zee said, "We are delighted to announce that Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra will host ZCA 2012."
Though SRK and Piggy Chops have been part of many films, this will be the first time when they will be hosting a public ceremony together.

SRK-Aryan: Happy father, Proud son!

Howdy my dear sunshines! I just got back from Pune, where a lot of my friends were making the most of some music festival taking place over the weekend. The place was stuffed with thousands of people and all. But the lack of mobile network didn't let too many messages come through to my kaaliberry. Which is why, all this gossip is flooding my inbox right now.
The latest news I hear is that Shah Rukh Khan is leaving no stone unturned in order to impress his son Aryan. The actor apparently has been on a travelling spree akele akele ever since the brouhaha around his last film settled down. He has been flying all over and around Europe. My jasoos who manages to keep a tab on everything that this Khan is up to, tells me that the actor is clearly taking time off from work and does not even remotely talk shop these days. He is currently in Marrakesh and will head to London soon after, before returning to the city in a day or two.
Anyway, coming back to news about making his beta khush, SRK on his visit to Morocco, happened to meet the Chinese martial artist and international actor Jet Li. Of course he was equally excited to have met someone who could possibly do half the stunts G.One did without any harnesses. But that wasn't what the actor was thrilled about. He was more excited about wanting to tell Aryan that he met one of his favourite actors. Let's hope this works for him. And if it doesn't, please don't let me be the first to know about it!
