Sanju to produce film for Salman!

Actor Sanjay Dutt is planning to produce a film starring buddy and Bigg Boss 5 co-host, actor Salman Khan.
"Me and Salman have been buddies for most of our lives, but have had few opportunities to work together. So I think its about time I produce a film with my bhai in the lead. I'm looking for a subject and script that goes with his personality. It could be a comedy or a romantic film or even a commercial potboiler," says Sanjay.
"I don't know if I'd work on that project as an actor. Once I finalise a project and he approves of it, I'll let him take a call on the music, leading lady and the director." adds the 52-year old actor. Meanwhile, Dutt who has bought the rights of Telegu film Badri, is waiting to hear from another friend, actor Ajay Devgn.
"I was extremely disappointed that Rascals didn't work. I found the concept of Badri interesting and something that went well with Ajay's body of work. So, I've sent him the film's DVD," says Sanjay.
He goes on to add that he hopes Ajay likes the idea. "If he does, he can take a call on who should direct the movie and the other details," he says.

Salman Khan to host Bigg Boss 6

Season five of Bigg Boss ended last night with dance performances and turn-by-turn eliminations. A week ago, rumours had it that Salman Khan was likely to return in the second half of the year with the next edition of the popular Colors show. That meant he would not be available for the third season of his pet TV show, 10 Ka Dum, which, incidentally, marked his debut as a TV host on Sony Entertainment.
Adding a sudden twist to the tale, a news report emerged a day before the finale, claiming that Salman had decided to drop out of Bigg Boss to go back to 10 Ka Dum. But a source from Colors insists that talks with the actor have already been initiated, and the channel wants him back for season six.
Salman“There are no talks with the makers or with the channel for 10 Ka Dum. The sources of that story are laughable,” smirks Salman on the Bigg Boss 5 sets at Karjat. “I love that show but I’m not likely to go back.”
When asked if that is an indication that he will be back with Bigg Boss 6, the actor says that he would love to return, something he had said even when season four had ended.
“It’s still a couple of months away. I don’t know what the channel is thinking. But I love this show. And if they really want me back, I will make time for them,” he adds.
His co-host Sanjay Dutt, however, doesn’t sound as confident about returning to the show that launched him on the small screen “I have my options open. This show made me realise the kind of audience connect TV has. And I’d like to connect with the viewers again, even if it’s not through this show.”
Missing Hrithik
It was recently reported that Hrithik Roshan was dropped from the Bigg Boss finale because he doesn’t get along with Salman Khan. Bring this up and co-host Sanjay says, “Salman and I would’ve loved to have Hrithik on the show. But he’s shooting Krrish 3 on a tight schedule and couldn’t move his timetable around.”

Star-spangled reality!

Like all of India’s people, television also loves her movie stars. Or else, why would it persist with drawing Bollywood celebrities in on its programmes in increasing numbers? Because people will watch them anywhere — at theatres and on the small screen.
Bollywood celebrities too are making a beeline for television in increasing numbers. Why? Because people will watch them anywhere — at theatres and on the small screen. Also, celeb-led programmes — mostly reality shows — enjoy prime time slots on channels.
But there’s more for the celebrities there. When India’s resurgent Bollywood darling, Salman Khan, could charge something like a Rs 4-5 crore fee (industry estimate) for each episode of Bigg Boss 5 last year, and Priyanka Chopra could charge Rs 1.2 crore per episode for Khatron Ke Khiladi 3 in 2010 — both shows on Colors — that’s not small money we’re looking at.
Last year saw Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Hritik Roshan, Karan Johar, Farah Khan, Preity Zinta and Dharmendra hosted reality shows.
This year, we are already seeing Arjun Rampal hosting Love to Hate You on Star Plus. Coming up very soon is also Aamir Khan with his talk show based on social issues, again on Star Plus. A number of the successful reality shows that have run more than one season will also return in 2012, with the same celebs or others.
“A reality show is itself a celebrity-maker. Reality shows see the dreams of millions of Indians come true. It makes audiences relate to the characters that appear on the screen, and this makes the shows more meaningful than any tearjerker,” said Prasoon Joshi, president, McCann Worldgroup, South Asia.
Some in the TV industry point out that channels may not make money from reality shows with Bollywood hosts because the costs are too high, adding up to higher budgets than what is spent on TV soaps. According to the FICCI- KPMG Indian Media and Entertainment Industry 2011 report, one celeb-hosted reality episode could cost up to Rs 1-2 crore, as compared with Rs 8-10 lakh for a normal soap’s episode.
“Also, reality shows have a shorter life of three to four seasons, which makes achieving breakeven difficult. However, they are considered important by broadcasters since they generate good media coverage, thereby helping build GRPs (gross rating points) and channel branding. However, with costs rising, managing production costs is likely to be critical for broadcasters,” said Rajesh Jain, executive director (entertainment), KPMG.
What all channels also acknowledge is that reality shows help them draw new eyeballs to the channels. After that, it is the channel’s challenge to retain as much of the new viewership as it can with its other programme formats.
“Masterchef India boosted the somewhat flagging TRPs of Star Plus. The show notched up a robust viewership,” said film trade analyst Amod Mehra. The first season of Masterchef India was hosted by Akshay Kumar. The actor charged Rs 1.5 crore per episode.
Not all celeb-hosted shows are unprofitable for channels. Successful international-format shows in their Indian avatars can draw in more money. “Ad-slot rates of celebrity pushed reality shows is at least 40% higher than the non-celeb show. Star power attracts enormous advertiser traction,” said Rajani Menon, associate VP, Carat Media, a media buying house.
But not all seasons of a show may deliver profits. “Channels have never made money out of reality formats. For instance, Kaun Banega Crorepati is not repeated every year because of the overall production cost. But these formats dramatically help in driving audience and adding on to the overall valuation of the rest of the programmes,” Menon said.
“With competition rising in the business due to channel clutter, broadcasters are ready to spend huge amounts on celebrities in the hope of wooing a more fragmented audience,” said Sneha Rajani, senior EVP and business head, Sony Entertainment Television.
“Most of the top Bollywood actors can ensure the initial success of a show and boost viewership ratings tremendously. After that, if a show has intrinsic strength, its chances of shoring up big advertising revenues automatically multiply,” said Mehra.
“It is all about business in reality. Stars and producers are doing simple business. The price tags may be big but the fact remains that TV producers are paying up because it sells,” said Joshi.
“These shows are all about formats and programme producers see a huge opportunity. Other soaps and dramas are like staple diet — necessary but routine,” said Niret Alva, co- founder, Miditech, a production house, and executive producer of Survivor India, an ongoing reality show on Star Plus in its first Indian-avatar season.
In spite of it being expensive, film celeb-pushed ‘reality’ has become an important content category. “The fiction vs. ‘reality’ divide is far more balanced today,” said Jain.
That soaps on television are staple diet is possibly the biggest reason why Bollywood stars don’t really act in them, even though soaps deliver the highest viewership. And TV soap actors who break into Bollywood are quick to drop out of the TV soaps circuit too. Film stars have no objections to hosting reality shows on TV, however, because that doesn’t overlap with what they do on the silver screen.
This may change soon with Anil Kapoor essaying Keifer Southerland’s role in the cult American TV series, 24, of which he bought the rights and has sold it to Star Plus for the production and broadcast of its Indian version this year. As with reality shows, it is possible that international fiction shows in their Indian avatars may attract more Bollywood actors to the small screen, reckon industry people, though they are not ready to put their signatures on it yet.

Top 10 Indian Songs of 2011

No item numbers, but original peppy compositions was the hallmark of Bollywood music in 2011. The first big hit was 'Darling', in the powerful resonating voice of Usha Uthup in Saath Khoon Maaf, while the loud and boisterous Vishal-Shekhar composition 'Oh la la' in The Dirty Picture gave partygoers something to gyrate on at New Year parties.

Some of the chartbusters brought in a whiff of Spanish and Russian flavour to the music. Overall, youthful songs and fresh compositions ruled the charts. A list of 10 most happening songs of 2011...

'Darling'
In the very beginning, Bollywood was introduced to this addictive number from Saath Khoon Maaf. The stretched usage of word "darling" in the powerful voice of Usha Uthup coupled with Rekha Bharadwaj's mischievous tone did the trick for the Vishal Bharadwaj composition. The Russian flavour infused in the song managed to captivate listeners.

'Sadi galli'
Lehmber Hussainpuri's original composition was restricted only to the heartlands of Punjab till composer Krsna discovered it and decided to use the folk number in the film Tanu Weds Manu. The already popular foot-tapping song caught the pulse of the listeners, thanks to its Punjabi lyrics and entertaining beats.

'Chaar baj gaye party abhi baaki hai'
The movie F.A.L.T.U sank without a trace at the box-office, but the only saviour was the energetic party number 'Char baj gaye' by singer Hard Kaur. A Sachin-Jigar composition became so popular that it became a must for discotheques and marriages.

'Dhinka chika'
It wasn't the signature dance step picturized on Salman Khan with his hands in his pockets that made the Ready song a rage. Full on energy, complimented by Mika Singh and Amrita Kak's voice, the infectious composition by guest composer Devi Shri Prasad, who included sound of whistles and dhols, forced everyone to shake a leg.

'Bhaag DK Bose'
The double meaning song from Delhi Belly had become a national anthem of sorts. Composed and sung by Ram Sampath, the quirky, interesting and upbeat number became an instant hit with listeners. A brave move by the producers and smart execution by Sampath as the lyrics projected the lingo of today's youth.

'Senorita'The idea of using voices of actors Abhay Deol, Hrithik Roshan and Farhan Akhtar in the fun-loving song from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara worked in favour of the film. Composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the number with Spanish flavour brought in the element of happiness with its happy-go-lucky beats.

'Teri Meri'
A poignant love song, it was definitely not Himesh Reshammiya's best composition, but the number stood out in the average music album of Bodyguard. High on Sufi touch, backed by the soulful voices of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Shreya Ghoshal, it was the only romantic number that made it to the top 10 charts this year.

'Chammak Challo'
If the Shah Rukh Khan starrer mega-budget film RA.One was the most awaited movie of the year, then the song too created a buzz much before its release. The song, which marks Bollywoood's first musical collaboration with international singer Akon, had Hinglish lyrics and a repeat value.

'Sadda Haq'
Music maestro AR Rahman might be selective about choosing his projects, but whenever he does, one expects nothing less than a musical treat. For Rockstar, the composer scored soulful numbers but this power-punched number, sung by Mohit Chauhan, was an instant success.

'Ooh la la'
Sometimes good things are saved for the last. And it happened when the bling king Bappi Lahiri along with Shreya Ghosal went back into the 1970's era and replicated the magic of nonsensical lyrics, loud beats and peppy song. And it all came together with the song 'Ooh la la'.

Bollywood paces up!

India’s back-with-a-bang mass film idol, Salman Khan, delivered 2011’s biggest box office hit in Hindi cinema, with Bodyguard crossing Rs 140 crore in box office collections.
In 2011, three Hindi films crossed the Rs 100 crore mark. Where mass entertainers like Bodyguard, Ready and
Ra.One worked big time at the box office, the more regionally-slanted Singham, the thoroughly urban Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Delhi Belly, the unusual and bold The Dirty Picture and the musically-themed Rockstar were also hits.
“Success of a film is measured by its earnings-to-cost comparison,” said Priti Shahani, chief strategy officer, Reliance Entertainment, which released Singham and co-produced Bodyguard. By that definition, 2011 was indeed a bonanza year for hits, including Tanu Weds Manu, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Yamla Pagla Deewana, Double Dhamaal, Shaitan, Haunted and Pyaar Ka Punchnaama. The December-released Don 2 is still new.
Are more consumers watching more Hindi films at theatres, or is Bollywood delivering genuinely good films? After a dismal 2009 and a marginally better 2010 when some big budget films failed to attract significant box office (BO) audiences, 2011 seemed to have a sustained run of successes.
“Indian film consumers want to be entertained,” said Shahani. But that’s what the film industry was stating even two years ago.
Vikram Malhotra, COO, Viacom18 Motion Pictures, asserted: “More people are watching more movies at theatres — the single biggest development for the industry. In 2011, 340 crore tickets were sold – a 12% jump over 2010, which was up by around 15% over 2009 ticket sales. The growth of multiplexes is definitely driving back consumers to theatres. It combines eating out and window shopping for the family. Plus, the middle class has taken to multiplexes significantly.”
However, if 2010 saw a 15% jump over 2009 in ticket sales, it should have reflected in more hits than Bollywood saw in that year. The canvas of the 2011 hit parade, therefore, must surely include more than just one or two factors.
A number of things that have already been at different stages of development for the film industry fell more neatly into place in 2011. The industry seems to have understood the Indian consumers’ diverse tastes in film viewing. Therefore, for every Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara that drew the audiences to multiplexes, a Singham did very well at single screen theatres in small-town India. Ra.One, a slick sci-fi entertainer, was also released in Tamil and Telugu. Earlier, Tamil Rajnikanth-starrer and superhit Endhiran had done huge business in its Hindi Robot avatar as well.
Southern siren Silk Smitha’s life story, depicted boldly yet sensitively in The Dirty Picture saw quality content winning. And yet, some 2011 hits did not necessarily have strong content but worked on star-power.
The hits also happened because budgets have become realistic, with the audience the genre can deliver being better understood by filmmakers, who are assigning budgets accordingly.
Though 2011 delivered a variety of hits, some films such as Yeh Saali Zindagi and Saat Khoon Maaf did not work. “Saat Khoon Maaf, I believe, was not promoted well,” said Pritie Jadhav, COO, P9 Integrated (Percept). “With so many films chasing audiences today, it is imperative to get the pre-release marketing and promotions right. The first three days will decide how a film will perform at the box office.” Any film that did well in 2011 almost definitely had strong marketing backing it. The consumption of film trailers on YouTube in 2011 indicates that consumer connects happened.
Even Hollywood film Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol, benefited from the pre-release visit by Tom Cruise and the hype that India distribution and promotion partner Viacom 18 Motion Pictures built up, said Malhotra. “Ghost Protocol grossed Rs 26 crore in its opening weekend at the BO and to date, has grossed Rs 50 crore in India alone. Avatar had grossed Rs 22 crore in its opening weekend in India.” He added: “With more film studios seeking Rs 100 crore film hits every second month, marketing and promotions are seeing higher spending with much more confidence,” Malhotra said.
The good news is that more films are drawing theatre audiences over more weeks than earlier. Tanu Weds Manu drew good audiences over nine weeks. Shaitan drew them over eight weeks.
Even as non-BO viewing and monetising avenues are opening up for films, BO revenues dominate at a 70-75% share of total earnings in India. The BO will thus continue to get the lion’s share of attention from the industry and consumers. The positive momentum of 2011 has set the pace for 2012, which promises to be action packed.

Mahek Chahal: People are jealous!

Actor Mahek Chahal, 32, who was evicted from the Bigg Boss House two weeks ago reentered the show yesterday as a wild-card contestant.
The move has set tongues wagging that the decision has something to do with her proximity with the show's co-host Salman Khan.
However, Mahek, who was chosen by the public over co-contestants Laxmi Tripathi and Shonali Nagrani, says, "I am a strong contender and people need a reason to break my image down. They are jealous and that's why they talk nonsense. But let me tell you that they won't succeed."
The actor who has now seen all the episodes of the show says that she does not have revenge on her mind. "I will surely clear things out. On the show, I heard people saying that they have never shouted or abused in the house, so I will tell them the truth and remind them of all that they did... I will confront them. Having said that, revenge s really not on my agenda."
About her current equation with the inmates, she says, "My equation with sidharth will be as it were ... will be my friend. I have lost trust in Amar. As for Sky, I think a person who has addressed others as 'bhootni' and 'dustbin' has no right to be on national TV. Juhi national TV. Juhi was the first to raise her voice, I need to remind her that."

Top 10 Bollywood actors that ruled 2011!

From He-Man to funny man, from flamboyant to sombre - Bollywood's top notch actors have shone on the silver screen in various avatars and also kept the cash registers ringing. We list the top 10 actors of the year:

1) Salman Khan - He should be titled hit khan. If Bollywood's knight in shining armour bailed the industry out in 2009 and 2010, he boosted the box office business this year too with Bodyguard and Ready. In both, neither the content was premium, nor were the performances superlative, but what helped the actor stand out were the big bucks his films yielded at the box office, strengthening his position as a bankable star.

2) Aamir Khan: What one missed in Salman Khan's films was prominently present in Aamir Khan-starrer Dhobi Ghat. Aamir wowed his fans as a lonely painter in the directorial debut of his wife Kiran Rao, who deftly handled a bouquet of stories, travelling across various sections of society in the lanes and bylanes of Mumbai. The actor had just one release, that too, consciously designed for niche audiences, but everyone eulogised it, saying, "Wow! What a performance! What an actor!"
If that were not enough, Aamir was admired for daring to produce adult comedy Delhi Belly and the film's success further strengthened his image in volatile Bollywood.

3) Ranbir Kapoor: If his great grandfather, grandfather and parents are admired and respected for their cinematic genius, Ranbir Kapoor has proved that he is a true torch-bearer of the Kapoor khandan. The youngster excelled in his only release Rockstar, which was marred by a bad script. His role required a range of emotions and he stood out in every scene and kept the audiences hooked.
4) Shah Rukh Khan: Romance is his forte! But this time Shah Rukh Khan donned the garb of a superhero in RA.One to woo his fans. Though the film was not appreciated much for its content, his fans liked him as a geek scientist and as a superhero. He also earned praise for the use of technology, innovative marketing and promotional techniques to promote his product.

5). Amitabh Bachchan: Retirement? No way, says Big B. Instead he is grabbing central roles at the age of 69 and this year too he came out with two films Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap and Aarakshan - as different as chalk and cheese. If the former saw him as a flamboyant underworld don, the latter featured him as a college principal fighting for the rights of students. In terms of business, neither were money spinners, but as far as acting is concerned, Amitabh is Amitabh. He was terrific in both the roles and critics gave him a thumbs up.

6) Farhan Akhtar: When there is a huge star cast, it is not easy to make an impression. But Farhan Akhtar did that in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, which also starred Abhay Deol and Hrithik Roshan. The art of acting is all about sensitivity, emoting, feelings -and Farhan got them all right.

7) Hrithik Roshan: Usually seen in over-the-top roles, Hrithik Roshan for the first time did a role that was slightly offbeat and closer to reality. If Kites didn't allow him to fly high in the sky, his performance in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara helped him unleash his potential as an actor.

8) R. Madhvan: An NRI, who belongs to a middle-class family, returns home to find a wife. He encounters a drunken girl, who is not interested in marrying him. But her spirit is such that he falls head over heels in love with her and it becomes heartbreaking for him to let her go with some other guy. Madhavan not only suited the role, but he revelled in it, earning plaudits from both critics and fans.

9) Abhay Deol: He emerged as the dark horse. Be it a doomed lover in Dev D or a smart thief in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye, he has effortlessly carried his roles in the past. He continued his winning streak as a confused lover in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

10) Saif Ali Khan: This Khan showed his sparks in Omkara and after that he embarked on a journey that showed his versatility. This year he had just one release in Aarakshan, which was not a super hit, but the film's box office performance didn't overshadow Saif's work. Critics felt he scored very highly in sincerity, subtlety and sheer screen presence as a Dalit boy in the movie, highlighting the reservation issue.
